What Is Anxiety?
It will be greatly beneficial to look at what anxiety is and what it is not in order to better understand its nature. For instance, anxiety can be differentiated from fear in many ways. When an individual is afraid, his or her fear is usually directed toward some concrete external object or situation. In other words, the feared event falls within the purview of possibility. You might fear not meeting your market target, missing an interview, or unable to progress to the next stage of a game.
Anxiety on the other hand comes with inability to specify the object or situation of anxiety. Its focus is more internal than external, being a response to a vague or unrecognized danger. You might be anxious about “losing control” of yourself or some situation, or feel a vague anxiety about “something bad happening.”
This issue affects our whole being. Therefore it affects our physiological, behavioral, and psychological sphere all at once.
On a physiological level, it may include bodily reactions such as rapid heartbeat, muscle tension, queasiness, dry mouth, or sweating. On a behavioral level, it can sabotage your ability to act, express yourself, or deal with certain everyday situations. Psychologically, it is a subjective state of apprehension and uneasiness. The most extreme form of anxiety can cause one to feel detached from self coupled with fear of dying or going crazy. Therefore, this condition can better be understood at its forms and levels.
